Hello from Kyoto! It is getting hotter and hotter here and it is said that this summer will get hotter than usual! I wonder what the weather is like in Kenya. Today I would like to write about basic information (including the weather) in Kenya. First of all, Kenya’s formal name is ‘Republic of Kenya’ and its capital is Nairobi. The population of the country is 45millions. There are over 40 kinds of tribes, such as the Maasai people, Kikuyu people, Luo people, and the Somalis. Secondly, about geography. Kenya lies on east part of Africa, right on the equator. It is three hours ahead of the standard time. It cover an area of 568,600㎢, which is 1.5 times larger than Japan. In the center of the country there is the great rift valley. It is said that the both sides of the valley walls are higher than 1,500m! Kenya also has the second highest mountain in Africa, the Mount Kenya which height is 5,199m. Kenya is also a land for wild animals. ‘Maasai Mara National Reserve’ is the most famous animal sanctuary and ‘Tsavo National Park’ is the largest park in Kenya as its area is almost same as Israel! Most of Kenya’s fields is savannah. There are desserts in the north and east, tropical forests in the west, primeval forest in the center. There are more lakes than I imagined. 7 lakes inside the great rift valley. The south east part faces the ocean and it is very popular for divers because of the beautiful coral reef. Thirdly, about climates. To my surprise, Kenya has a very pleasant climate in spite of the location. Most of the major cities in Kenya are on high lands, higher than 1,000m. The capital, Nairobi is 1,700m high and its average annual temperature is 10~28 degree Celsius. Compared with the temperature in Japan (highest: over 35 in summer, lowest: below 0 in winter), I think the climate in Kenya is very mild and pleasant though there are some parts in the coast whose climate is similar to Japan (high temperature, high humidity). There are dry season and wet season. From the end of March to June, it is the big rainy season, from October to December, the small rainy season. I am happy that we plan to go to Kenya in September, it’s in the dry seasons. I cannot lower my guard yet because I found out that temperature in September in Kenya could go down under 10 degree Celsius while the average temperature in Kyoto in September is about 25 degree Celsius, but come to think of it, Kenya is in the southern hemisphere. No wonder it is cool because it is winter when it is summer in Japan! This time, I wrote about basic information, geography and climate about Kenya. Thank you for reading. Arigato.
Hello, I am Tomoki Okamuro, a member of the JKSC (Japan Kenya Student Conference). I am a student at Kyoto University and my major is civil engineering. What comes to mind when I say 'Kenya'? Safari parks with lots of wild animals, Kilimanjaro, or Masai people? There are more we can learn from Kenya! I would like to study about the country before leaving for Kenya in September! Any comments and opinions are welcome! Let's learn together! |
